Thageini Washing Station - Thageini Wet Mill
The Thageini washing station is part of the Aguthi Farmer's Cooperative Society, located in the fertile Nyeri region of Kenya, renowned for its high-quality coffee production. The cooperative brings together approximately 2,000 smallholder farmers, 350 of whom are men and 100 women, who contribute to the station's operations.
\nThe station focuses on sustainable practices and community development, balancing environmental protection with quality production. The farm specializes in growing classic Kenyan coffee varieties, SL28 and SL34, which thrive in the high altitudes and rich volcanic soils of this region. \n
Farmers and Producers
Thageini’s coffee production is supported by a community of dedicated smallholder farmers. These farmers apply meticulous cultivation and harvesting techniques, selecting only the ripest cherries for processing. The Aguthi Cooperative provides agronomic training to its members, ensuring that they adopt best practices to maximize both production and coffee quality.
The washing station uses the traditional yet precise washing processing method, which brings out the intrinsic qualities of the SL28 and SL34 varieties. This collective effort reflects a commitment to producing exceptional, internationally acclaimed coffees.
Washing Processing and SL28 & SL34 Varieties
At Thageini, the washing processing method involves removing the pulp from the coffee cherries, followed by fermentation to remove the remaining mucilage. The beans are then thoroughly washed with clean water and dried on raised beds. This method preserves the clarity and freshness of the coffee, providing a clean flavor profile.
The SL28 and SL34 varieties, developed in Kenya, are prized for their distinct acidity, balanced sweetness and aromatic complexity. These varieties are relatively rare and highly sought after in the specialty coffee market due to their vibrant and refined aromas.
The Impact of Altitude on Coffee
Thageini coffee is grown at altitudes between 1,650 and 1,800 meters above sea level. These altitudes provide cool temperatures that slow the ripening process of the coffee cherries, allowing for the development of more concentrated sugars and complex flavors. The high-altitude growing conditions also contribute to the density of the beans, improving their ability to retain vibrant flavors during roasting.
The altitude of Thageini Station, combined with the region's rich soils and meticulous farming techniques, plays a key role in creating coffees that reflect the unique qualities of Kenyan specialty coffee.
