Located near the capital Nairobi, Kiambu County is one of Kenya's most respected and historic coffee growing areas. Here, rich volcanic soils, high altitude and varied microclimates create ideal conditions for producing specialty coffee.
Rioki Estate stands out among local farms for its rigorous approach to cultivation and processing. As a medium-sized farm with its own mill, Rioki enjoys complete control over every stage – from hand-harvesting to fermentation and drying.
This coffee is selected and imported by Project Origin , an initiative that prioritizes direct relationships with producers and fair prices to support the sustainable development of farming communities. The goal is not only quality in the cup, but also a positive impact in the community.
SL varieties
This coffee comes from two of Kenya’s most iconic varieties – SL28 and SL34 , selections developed in the 1930s to offer excellent cup quality and drought resistance. These varieties are renowned for their explosive berry profile, intense citrus acidity and clean aftertaste.
Washing processing
The coffee undergoes a traditional washing process , with wet fermentation and multiple washing stages. After pulping, the beans are naturally fermented in water to remove mucilage, then thoroughly washed and slowly sun-dried on African beds. This process accentuates the lively acidity and aromatic transparency – the signature of Kenyan coffees.
The experience in the cup
What defines this coffee is the crisp and juicy acidity typical of Kenya, with pronounced aromas of blueberry and blood orange , complemented by sweet notes of ripe apple and raisins . The body is light and elegant, making this coffee extremely suitable for manual brewing methods (pour-over, Aeropress), but also shines as a complex and fruity espresso.
